Why live here
Living in Whitehorse offers a unique combination of urban culture, peace, solitude and access to Canada’s greatest outdoors. There’s a reason why so many come for a visit, but never leave…an unparalleled way of life awaits. The photos you see below are not from a tourism promotion or a professional photographer. They are photos of our staff, and their families and friends, experiencing all the joys and advantages of what life looks like in the Yukon.
Economic Benefits
Living in a “prescribed northern zone” allows residents to claim significant tax deductions: residency deductions and travel deductions. We also enjoy no provincial or territorial sales tax on goods and services – only GST. Our housing prices are right around the national average, and property taxes are on par as well.
All the amenities…without the traffic
Within Whitehorse, we have an incredible Canada Games Centre, including a lap pool, family pool, indoor track, multiple ice services, wellness centre, gymnasium, and indoor soccer pitch. The City of Whitehorse offers an amazing array of recreational programming for residents of all ages. Our charming downtown remains vibrant with cafes and restaurants offering local and international cuisine, as well as shops offering gourmet foods, art and craft, home furnishings, books and toys. A movement to support local agriculture is growing exponentially and access to Yukon grown meat and produce is increasing at markets, shops and the larger grocery stores. On the outskirts of Whitehorse, we also have numerous “big box” stores for groceries, home and garden, and hardware. Our newly accredited Yukon University offers a wide variety of programs and courses, and a research centre with numerous programs including Biodiversity Monitoring and Climate Change. Our international airport is easily accessible, with direct flights offered to Vancouver (multiple flights daily), Edmonton, Calgary, Victoria, Kelowna, Yellowknife, Ottawa and Toronto, as well as seasonal flights to Europe.
Art and Culture
It’s true – not many operas come to town. But if you are a patron of the arts, and like to enjoy a full range of performing arts, music, fine art and craft, Indigenous history, and everything in between, then practically every weekend will be an enriching experience. The Yukon Arts Centre has gallery space and hosts national and international productions. Summer festivals abound. The Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre offers the opportunity to experience Indigenous culture on traditional territory along the Yukon River. The Fireweed Market Society supports local artists and growers with a weekly summer market and a December Christmas market. MacBride Museum is not only a gateway into the history of the Yukon, but also a newly renovated and spectacular community meeting space. There are many other galleries and artists – too many to list here, we encourage you to check out the vibrant arts scene here

The Greatest Outdoors
Recreation: an understated word to describe what awaits in Whitehorse, a small city with a huge backyard. Exploring beyond the city throughout our beautiful territory offers unlimited adventure potential.
Within Whitehorse city limits, we have world class cross-country ski trails, an alpine ski resort and mountain bike park, a curling club, 2 golf courses here and here, fat biking trails, over 700 km of mountain biking and hiking trails, climbing and numerous lakes for swimming and paddling (or skating!). Venture a short (or long) distance outside of the city and discover snowmobile paradise, backcountry skiing, world class hunting and fishing, spectacular wilderness hiking, paddling, and camping. After all the adventuring, go relax at the Eclipse Nordic Hotsprings.

Family Life
Whitehorse is an ideal, safe community in which to raise a family. It is the reason many people come and also stay. Kids still “go out and play” in our close-knit neighbourhoods and surrounding wilderness, and also have the opportunities to participate in a huge array of programs as they grow. The government recently introduced A Universal Child Care Model to make early years childcare more affordable for all. Our Child Development Centre offers programs to support the developmental needs of all pre-school age children. The Yukon Literacy Centre does similar community building work. Whitehorse schools offer access to early and late French Immersion, as well as a Francophone elementary and high school. Within the public school system, there are a broad range of experiential education programs, both in French and English: STEAM/STEM programs, Outdoor Education, Fashion, Design, Music, Art and Drama. As kids move into the post-secondary, government support for costs can be accessed. One of the best family excursions is to our Yukon Wildlife Preserve. The City of Whitehorse offers recreational programs for all ages. Sporting opportunities are many – and teams regularly travel to “outside” competitions and the Yukon sends a strong contingent to both the Arctic Winter Games and Canada Winter and Summer Games.
